After Sonny Hayes (Pitt) was forced to retire from Formula One in the 1990s following a serious crash, he began racing in other disciplines while also gambling and working as a taxi driver. His friend and former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) now owns and runs the struggling Apex Grand Prix team and recruits Sonny to race for him and to mentor his other driver, young prodigy Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris).
