In the first series, Alan is rescued from the career wilderness and asked to temporarily co-present the BBC One variety show 'This Time' after one of the regular hosts falls ill. With co-host Jennie (Susannah Fielding) at his side, Alan does his best to seize the opportunity and reclaim the spotlight but, as he navigates the pitfalls of live TV and the show's various light-hearted news items and current affairs segments, his attempts often steer him down a calamitous path. In the second series, Alan continues in his role as co-presenter on 'This Time'. However, a change of personnel elsewhere in the department gives Alan the fear about losing his position.
